Metabolism After 40: What Changes and What You Can Do About It

Around middle age, many people notice their metabolism isn't what it used to be. Some of that is normal:

  • Muscle mass gradually declines, and muscle burns more energy than fat — even at rest.
  • Activity levels often drop quietly over the years: desk jobs, long commutes, less free play.
  • Sleep quality can change, and poor sleep affects how your body manages energy.

What helps is mostly unglamorous:

  • Strength training two or three times a week helps preserve muscle, which supports a healthy metabolic rate.
  • Eat enough protein to support that muscle maintenance.
  • Keep daily movement up — total steps matter more than one intense workout.
  • Prioritize sleep; it's when your body does much of its metabolic housekeeping.

No one needs extreme measures. Consistent basics work better than dramatic short-term efforts.
